Week 22 - off the ......... errr off thhhe ahrh

Yeah as the title suggests this project and me aren’t the happiest couple. This week in terms of formal lessons was absent and to be honest how I wish there were lessons at least to have some sort of structure to a project this large of scale because this week I feel as if I am part of a sinking ship. I feel that the overall group structure so far doesn’t seem to be quite concrete as I would like it to be with several members of the group going away to work on assets with no visual evidence as to if they have been produced or not. Plus it doesn’t help when personally I feel that an environmental art project of this size is in fact somewhat holding back my learning as personally I feel like I would be rather benefiting from studying retoping techniques for characters and basic anatomy. I am trying my best to cater off the map towards character related themes but at the end of the day I will have to juggle this amongst general asset model and I feel that spending 10 weeks staying stagnant modelling basic assets would be a betrayal to all that I have learnt and studied during this year.

Anyway this is what I have been producing this week

  • Caliban

The slide show above contains my sketches and concepts of Caliban’s bust that I am working on for off the map as well as some studies and a self-reflection on an illustration I produced. This week as mentioned before I am starting to find myself less and less interested in this project and more concerned about my own personal learning as I found out a lot about myself during character project. Whilst on the subject of character project, this week we had out character presentations and well to be honest i kind of feel quite disappointed in myself. Many of the criticism was based on how I present my images and adjusting the slides of the presentation itself. In addition to fixing the colour pallete of my characters. These I find can be remedied with ease the thing I am disappointed in myself however is my retoped low poly model.

  • Front_Face
  • Front Body
  • Back

The subject of this came up in my presentation all with points I agree with about well how bad of a job it is. Looking back I rushed it to meet deadline but in hindsight I honestly believe I would have been better off handing in something which shows evidence of a decent retop than this mess here. Although I got a product out it was at the sake of quality and at the sake of actually learning how to properly retop.

Ahh it seems things are a bit of a downhill curve since character project. As writing this post in terms of creating a structure for off the map a group meeting will be organised. In terms of my personal production I just have to get on with it but feeling good about it seems to be very eehhhh ?.........
