Week 5- I wanna take you for a ride (....or its about damn time)

The 5th week into the project and admittedly this has been such a slow week. So slow that I can’t even think of a relevant title for this week blog. So to start, project continues and in this week’s game production we learnt about matinees and how to make an animated movie like scene.

This will help in the coming days of the project as we near the finish date.

Once again we had to present and so far, I’m quite chuffed to say but the level is actually looking really nice. I say this because looking back this project and having to deal with admin and planning has been a very stressful one with people having to comprise because of peoples differing work ethics and abilities. But looking at this screenshot right here it looks like we’ve managed to bounce off each other and pull something nice together.

During presentation the main feedback we were given was to:

  • Turn down the reflectivity of the floor itself

  • Add a colder colour grading to convey a similar look to the film

  • Enlarge Tapestries to look much more closer to the film scene

  • Windows size and overall room should be thinner

  • Pipe organs should be hollow to properly sell a realistic environment

  • Less sharp edges in certain areas to once again sell a realistic environment

Film ref- We’re almost there just that last little jog and it’s all over

Considering that my group and I seem to have finished modelling assets, hopefully next week will just be about working engine and finally getting back to what I have started to feel like we are not doing enough on this course. That sweet sweet design. I think as an action plan for tomorrow group meeting needs to be made because right now although things are being imported and placed in engine things feel way too floaty. There is a sense of uncertainty with the progress of the level and admittedly I’m quite worried.

But apart from that I’m so ecstatic that this project is about to end and move on to the sentry gun. This project has been a very technical one and as a result I haven’t enjoyed it as much as I could have. I miss concepting and iterating. But the technical skills learnt from such an intensive project I feel have given me the confidence to take on the sentry gun and any other engine project in the next coming days. Whatever you throw at me game art I am ready.

This week’s visual studies also added to my excitement to the sentry gun project as well just had a formal presentation of getting back into the idea of design which this week’s critical studies also discussed. After having such a presentation in the VS session I just couldn’t contain myself and started just throwing down a bunch of sketches in my notebook.

I mean it’s ahead of project but I’ve even started noting down some quick ideas. There really rough and somewhat silly but the tutors made it clear we can have fun with this and oh boy am I going to have fun.

The sketches didn’t end here. In critical studies we discussed the significance of iteration and in this week’s seminar we got to design a bunch of axes. After 4 weeks of very technical work, this was a breath of fresh air and as mentioned previously I just can’t wait to get back into making cool concepted stuff. It looks like things are finally leaving the tunnel that is this project. All I have to do now is make sure my group and I have a group meeting and discuss what we are going to make sure we meet the end.
